2.5 – Infraction

EPISODE 2.5 – INFRACTION

SETTING – Dreamy non-space.

SHELLY (V.O.)

Jim, I’m not sending you a long message this time. Things are too crazy. I can’t navigate what I can tell you and what I can’t, and I really don’t want to lie to you. Be careful, be safe, be brave. The world is counting on all of us, but we have to take care of ourselves too.

SETTING – Intelligence Office

JIM

Everything’s going to shit, isn’t it?

MARTHA

You needed her to tell you that? You couldn’t figure it out by yourself?

JIM

What does she mean about stuff she can’t tell me? Are we being compartmentalized? We’re supposed to get everything. Our job is to analyze the big picture. How can we do that if they hide things from us?

MARTHA

First of all, the Mole means new rules. They just can’t trust everything to people at our pay grade anymore. Second, I’m not sure that ANYONE over here knows the stuff she’s talking about.

JIM
Who does, then?

MARTHA

My guess would be her sister. I think young Roxanne is going off the reservation.

JIM

What, and joining the Lookers?

MARTHA
She’d never do that, you should know that already. No I think she’s planning to disobey orders and do something stupid and heroic.

JIM
Is that your professional analysis?

MARTHA

Yep.

JIM

And are you going to warn somebody?

MARTHA
Fuck them. The way we’re getting jerked around, I’m liking her more than them these days.

JIM
What about me? Should I include it in my report, or are you ordering me to leave it out?

MARTHA
You must do what you feel is right, of course.

JIM

Well normally I’d argue her side, but if you’re- Wait, did you just quote Star Wars at me?

MARTHA
You could learn a lot from Obi Wan. He knew how to get things done.

JIM

I don’t remember him doing much, other than winning a bar brawl and overpaying for a flight.

MARTHA
Ha, perfect. You see, you’re Luke.

JIM

*scoffs*

MARTHA

No, I- I don’t mean just you. The whole audience is Luke. We just see what Ben wants us to see.

JIM

And what does that leave out?

MARTHA
What’s necessary. Think of it: Luke doesn’t want to leave Tatooine. He promised his Uncle he’d stay. If Ben lets things sit like that, the rebellion is destroyed. But, while Luke is taking his little nap, the aunt and uncle are dealt with. Ben does what’s necessary and the galaxy is down a couple collaborators.

JIM
The stormtroopers killed Owen and Beru.

MARTHA
Did you see them do it?

JIM

No, but it follows logically. They massacred the Jawas, and then traced the droids-

MARTHA

Did you see them massacre the Jawas?

JIM

No but Beh-…

MARTHA

Go on.

JIM
Ben said they did.

MARTHA

Mmm-hmm.

JIM
It seems very out of character for Ben to lie about something like that.

MARTHA
“Darth Vader betrayed and murdered your father.” Not exactly the truth.

JIM

So you’re saying Ben Kenobi is the villain of Star Wars?

MARTHA
Not at all. He’s the hero they needed. The kind of hero we need now.

JIM

And you think George Lucas had this all planned out?

MARTHA

Death of the author, my friend. All that matters is the work, not the intention. Maybe God didn’t mean our lives to amount to a big joke, but it doesn’t matter. That’s the life we’re living.

Beat.

JIM

Are things all right at home?

MARTHA

Things at home are peachy. It’s things at work that suck.

OPENING MUSIC

SETTING: The woods at night.

NICOLE

Put whatever it is in whichever of these slots it fits. Make sure you have it turned so the exposed metal part will touch the metal inside. Then, push the button, and it gets copied to the stick. If it’s not a card, but something with a USB port, plug it here or use one of these adapter cables, push the button, and nine times out of ten it’ll copy. No light means disconnected, flickering green light means working, solid green light means done. Red light mean something went wrong.

ROXANNE

What do I do if I get the red light?

NICOLE

Disconnect, re-connect, press the button again. If that doesn’t work, give up and get out. There’s no time to teach you the finer points. There’ll be an error log on the stick, so hopefully we can figure out what went wrong and you can try again later.

ROXANNE

Try again? Ycch.

NICOLE

If whatever your plan is works once, it might work again. Are you sure you don’t want to give me more details about it?

ROXANNE

There isn’t much to tell, and I think you’re better off not knowing. Dom knows the first rendezvous, you know the second, and I have the panic phone number. If none of those work, then we’re sunk anyway.

NICOLE

Okay, but you do know that anything designed to detect a bug or a wire is going to find this, right? Don’t they scan you on your way into the building?

ROXANNE

They do. It’s going in another way and I’ll pick it up on-site.

NICOLE

And you’re going tomorrow?

ROXANNE

Yep.

NICOLE

Doesn’t seem like enough time for you to mail it. So that means someone’s muling it in for you. Maybe without knowing it?

ROXANNE
Nicollllle…

NICOLE

Better I don’t know, right. Who wants to hear what a trained, experienced courier has to say before she goes playing Jane Bond?

ROXANNE
Listen, I respect your work, and how serious you are about it. I always have. But I have to do this my own way. You’d do the same.

NICOLE

I’d try, but Major Craig would make me spill it, and then show me where I’m wrong. Did that more than once. Probably the reason I’m still making runs while others have been picked up.

ROXANNE
Not this time. I’m grateful for this, and I’m glad for everything you’ve done to help with the drop-off plan. But the inside of it is all me, and my helpers.

NICOLE

Helperzzz, plural?

ROXANNE

Need to know basis, Nick.

NICOLE

Nick, hun? I like it. Let’s keep that.

ROXANNE

And you could start calling me Rox.

NICOLE

I’ll just keep calling you the names I never say out loud. You always seem to know when I’m talking to you.

ROXANNE

Oh God, whatever. All right. I’m off home. I go to work in the morning, and probably do the deed toward the end of my shift. I’ll return this to you tomorrow night.

NICOLE

*breath of mixed exasperation and resignation*

Okay. Take care of yourself.

ROXANNE
Thanks.

NICOLE

It’s not just for you. If anything happens to you, I and the human race will be in big trouble. And Dom is even harder to take when he doesn’t have a girlfriend.

ROXANNE
You’re sweet. GIve me a hug for luck?

NICOLE

Rather not.

ROXANNE

What if it’s a mission priority?

NICOLE

Fine.

They hug. Roxanne kisses her on the cheek.

NICOLE

A peck on the cheek, huh? Are we besties now?

ROXANNE

By process of elimination, we are.

SETTING: Elsewhere outdoors.

Gwen’s voice gets louder as high heeled shoes approach her on the sidewalk.

WEIRD GWEN

I tell you, there is no limit to the power of redemption. The greatest enemy of the faith, a murderer and a persecutor, a man that held the coats of other men as they went to kill the true believers, even he was visited and even he was saved, and became among the greatest of teachers.

CARRIE

Pardon me.

WEIRD GWEN

Oh, you begin well, but pardon is not within my power. You must ask one greater than I.

CARRIE

Um…you misunderstand. I wanted to talk to you for a moment. Are you Gwen Flynn?

WEIRD GWEN

She is me.

CARRIE

I understand that many people walk past your…space, here. People going to and from work, and also young people up to mischief.

WEIRD GWEN

Ah, young people. Innocence and sin are not strangers. However, judge not, lest you be made to live in a glass house.

CARRIE

Um, yes. Well without accusing anyone, I’m told that some people use that tunnel there. But it’s unsafe, and unsanitary. I would like to discourage people from using it.

WEIRD GWEN

I have no authority to stop them. The new lords of this world have not given me their mark.

CARRIE

Oh, of course. You aren’t to blame at all. But, if I showed you the pictures of some people, would you tell me whether they’ve used it in the past? So I can talk to them about it?

WEIRD GWEN

Do not try to be other than you are.

CARRIE

Excuse me?

WEIRD GWEN

No excuse is needed; you had no part in your making. You have been put on the path of hunting the visionary, as the Lawyer did the Deacon. Follow it, by the most direct means you can find. Don’t waste your time on trivial things. Turn neither to right nor left. Your appointment is made. Being late will serve no purpose. Do you hear me?

CARRIE

Perhaps…I’m wasting both of our time.

WEIRD GWEN

My time on this Earth is worth less than sand in the hourglass. But yours may be more like golden dust.

CARRIE

Thank you…for your help.

High heels again, diminishing into the distance.

WEIRD GWEN

My help is freely given to all who ask.

*laugh*

And to many who don’t. And to some who, like that model citizen of olden times, do not know how following their wicked path serves another purpose.

*noise of resigned frustration*

Not that any of us do.

SETTING: Roxanne’s room. Crickets.

Roxanne’s door is opened.

SYLVIA

*very much a Mom waking up her daughter*

Roxanne!

ROXANNE

(sleepy)

Mom?

SYLVIA

Get up. I have things to tell you. The stuff you wanted to know.

ROXANNE
All of it?

SYLVIA

Yes, everything. Where the other me puts her purse, what her entry codes are, where her office is, and also some things about that bitch Kray.

ROXANNE

You saw her?

SYLVIA

Big as life. All smiles for all the aliens, including me. But her eyes look dead.

ROXANNE

She’s under a lot of pressure, I guess. To find me.

SYLVIA

Well, she made her choices, she’s getting the consequences.

ROXANNE

She didn’t really have any choice. It’s all physics and chemistry. That’s how I try to think about it anyway. I don’t want to be angry all the time.

SYLVIA

Hm. I suppose you would know about people who are angry all the time.

ROXANNE
I miss you guys. I miss hearing the shouting through my wall.

SYLVIA
You wouldn’t miss it if you hadn’t lost it.

ROXANNE
Well, yeah, by definition.

SYLVIA

Don’t sass me, girl, we’re supposed to be planning your secret mission.

ROXANNE

Yeah, right, back on track.

SYLVIA

I wish you would tell me exactly what you plan to do.

ROXANNE

I’m sorry, but I can’t take a chance that the other you might subliminally pick up on things I tell you. Shelly hasn’t turned me in, or seemed suspicious…except when I was acting really suspiciously. But she and I haven’t been in a high-stress situation like this is going to be. If some hunch makes the Looker you turn left instead of right, that could wreck the whole thing.

SYLVIA

Oh, seeing Shelly be one of them was so hard. I wish I could talk to the real her. You say we can move around the house…even though it’s not the real house. What would happen if we went into her room and woke her up?

ROXANNE

I don’t know, but the stakes are too high to experiment right now. Once this is done, maybe we’ll give a try.

SYLVIA
*disappointed noise*

If you say so.

ROXANNE
DEFINITELY we’ll give it a try! I just have to keep focused on this, Mom. Threading this needle is super-tricky. I can’t get distracted by anything.

SYLVIA
I’m…glad to see you so serious about this, Roxanne. You’ve always had so much potential.

ROXANNE

Only because you kept telling me I did.

SETTING: JUSTIN’S ROOM.

Usual lights, door, lights.

CARRIE

Hello? HELLO?

JUSTIN

Just a moment.

*pause*

Sorry for keeping you waiting, Mrs. Kray. I was indisposed.

CARRIE

Oh…I’m sorry for intruding without sending word.

JUSTIN

I assume your business is particularly significant, then.

CARRIE

Yes.

JUSTIN

Then I am at your service. I knew this moment would come, but not the day nor the hour.

CARRIE

No?

JUSTIN

Well, I did correctly guess the day.

CARRIE

I have it here, on this drive, the details on our research into breaking immunity. So many things I didn’t have an inkling about. Experiments…Things that would be terrible if our goals weren’t so vital.

JUSTIN

You’ve read it, then.

CARRIE

I read as much of it as I could understand, with the help of some books. I wanted to know what I was giving out, and what the agent might be looking for.

JUSTIN

And you bringing it to me means that you intend to transmit it.

CARRIE

Yes. As you say, it’s the only option that makes any sense. I don’t know enough about what he’s looking for to manipulate the answer, and I have to do something before he goes silent.

JUSTIN

There is little indication of that. I just decoded a new transmission.

CARRIE

He’s sent a new message?

JUSTIN

We have received data: more information about Resistance operatives, facilities, and activities. But there is no message relevant to your decision.

CARRIE

Well, everything he wants is here. Please copy the file and send it out on the high capacity channel. I’m ready to be done with this.

JUSTIN

I will begin work on it immediately.

CARRIE

And please…give me a copy of that new data while you’re at it. I should be looking at those raw, instead of your analysis. Some little detail may tell me something about him.

JUSTIN

Certainly.

SETTING: LIAISON OFFICE, outer area. Both Looker and Unaltered voices echo, along with doors opening and closing, stamping, and footsteps.

WOMAN 1

Number 23. Number 23!

ROXANNE

That’s me.

WOMAN 1

Your form, please.

Roxanne hands over a piece of paper.

WOMAN 1

You’ve finished your route for the day?

ROXANNE

*bored*

That’s right.

WOMAN 1

The car has been returned, fully fueled, to the indicated spot?

ROXANNE

Sure has.

WOMAN 1

And you have returned all departmental property to the kitchen? And the client keys to the peg cage?

ROXANNE

Yep, all just like I swore to in subsection C. All accounted for.

WOMAN 1

My questions are not accusations. It is my duty to provide assistance in making sure you have done everything properly, even when the form would indicate that you already have.

ROXANNE
And I really appreciate it.

WOMAN 1

I…hope you do.

Stamping sound.

WOMAN 1

You are hereby certified as having completed your work for the day. Please leave the building, and have a good evening.

ROXANNE
I’ll do that, just because you asked.

WOMAN 1

Th…thank you.

Roxanne walks away from the desk, rounds a corner. Echoes diminish.

ROXANNE (V0)

Here’s where things get tricky. I hope you were right Mom.

Roxanne keys in a code, door unlocks, she opens it.

Flashback music.

SYLVIA (V0)

Every day, each worker takes two fifteen minute breaks on the roof, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. So they can contact their collective thingy. They do it by office block. Each block has its own assigned times.

ROXANNE (VO)

The whole office goes together?

SYLVIA (VO)

Yeah. I think it’s in case they have something to talk about with a third person. Or maybe they just like to move in groups. Oh God, honey. They’re so…alien. So different.

ROXANNE (VO)

I know, Mom. It’s hard to get used to at first, but it gets easier. A little easier.

SYLVIA (VO)

I hope so. Well, our shifts for tomorrow are 10:15 and 3:45.

ROXANNE (VO)

Oh great! If I come in a little early I can finish work around then.

Flashback music ends.

Same door closes, echoes cut out almost entirely.

ROXANNE (VO)

Here we go. Window, door, window, right turn, door, window, Mom’s office. I think. Check…casually. That’s her purse. Try the door…unlocked, just like she said.

Flashback music.

SYLVIA (VO)

It seems like they trust each other completely.

ROXANNE (VO)

Yeah, that’s what Shelly says too. But that it’s starting to break down. That’s one reason I have to do this now, before they tighten up. And I have to get it right the first time. If they had any inkling something like this could happen, they’d at least leave someone to watch the office.

SYLVIA (VO)

Does it have to be you?

ROXANNE (VO)

It has to be me.

SYLVIA (VO)

I don’t like thinking of you in there.

ROXANNE (VO)

I’ll be fine. If they catch me, I’ll just say I was looking for you. You know, the other you. I’ll say I followed someone in.

SYLVIA (VO)

They won’t believe that. There’s a hidden camera on the outer door. I saw the monitors on the security desk flip through it. There’ll be recordings.

ROXANNE (VO)

Okay, I’ll say I saw someone else key in some other time, and I copied their code. I’ll get a slap on the wrist, that’s all.

SYLVIA (VO)

But what if you don’t get caught, and go through with it? You’ll be in their video files forever.

ROXANNE (VO)

They won’t know anything happened, so they won’t check the video files. Even Lookers have better things to do than re-watch all the files of days when nothing happened. And I’ll dress neatly. Nothing about me will scream Immune.

SYLVIA (VO)

Except your eyes. They can see the light from each other’s eyes, just like you can. And you said cameras pick it up.

ROXANNE (VO)

Mom. This is happening. Too many impossible things have gone my way to turn back now.

Music dies down.

ROXANNE (VO)

Oh, Roxanne from yesterday, you weren’t very bright. But you had guts, I’ll give you that. And here’s the duplicator in the left pocket, right where you left it. And now out the way I came in and carefully find Carrie’s office before she gets…

CARRIE

No, Steven, nothing’s wrong…exactly.

ROXANNE (VO)

Down! Oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap.

CARRIE

I just wanted to hear your voice.

ROXANNE (VO)

She’s in the office. Everyone’s supposed to be upstairs. But, of course, she’s not upstairs, because she can’t read the sky. She’s just an Alpha. Roxanne from yesterday, you are dumber than I thought. And how is it that nobody trying to talk me out of this pointed out that problem? Oh, because I didn’t tell them about this part of the plan. No one but Dominic. And that was probably because I knew I could steamroll him.

Flashback music fades in.

SETTING: Outdoors that morning. Birdsong.

DOMINIC (VO)

Listen, I understand why you won’t tell Thee or the Major about any of this, because they’d stop you from doing it. But Nicole is already in. What’s the harm in running it by her?

ROXANNE (VO)

She’ll try to take over. And I’ve got to follow my instincts on this. I’m operating on a level…I can’t really articulate. I just know some things will work out somehow, and I have to have confidence in my hunches or I won’t follow them fast enough. And I can’t do that with Nicole making me doubt myself.

DOMINIC (VO)

So why are you telling me?

ROXANNE (VO)

In case something goes wrong. There should be a record of exactly what I planned to do, and I don’t dare write it down.

DOMINIC (VO)

So you admit something might go wrong?

ROXANNE (VO)

OF COURSE SOMETHING MIGHT FUCKING GO WRONG. The whole thing could go wrong. I’ve always known that. But this is something I have to do.

DOMINIC (VO)

*carefully*

Okay, then run me through it.

ROXANNE (VO)

I go to the office while Carrie will be out of it, and I go through her purse.

DOMINIC (VO)

She won’t have her purse with her?

ROXANNE (VO)

Mom says everyone leaves their stuff: purses, briefcases, messenger bags, everything. Something about feeling unencumbered when they face the sky. It’s not exactly a religious thing, but that’s the closest comparison I can think of. And she’ll want to follow their lead.

DOMINIC (VO)

She won’t have the card locked in her desk?

ROXANNE (VO)

I don’t think so. She carries the information between places. She won’t want to put it somewhere she might forget it.

DOMINIC (VO)

What if she keeps it in her pocket?

ROXANNE (VO)

Carrie Kray is a woman of fashion.

DOMINIC (VO)

Okay…what does that mean?

ROXANNE (VO)

*sighs*

I guess it means: “Trust me, I know more about this than you do.” If she has pockets at all, they won’t be the kind you’d want to keep a priceless secret in without worrying it might fall out.

Flashback music & setting fades out.

ROXANNE (VO)

That was it. That was the moment when someone might have caught the fact that Carrie would still be here. But we were arguing about pockets.

CARRIE

Everyone here is sweet, and very dedicated. And that special agent, Justin, the one I told you about, who it turns out I talked to about you on the first night? He’s been very sympathetic. I’m not sure I could have gotten through this without him.

ROXANNE (VO)

All right, enough blaming Roxanne from yesterday. Think for yourself. My only hope is she takes a bathroom break. Slim hope, should I back out? No. There’ll never be a better chance. In that case…crouching here I’m right in her path to the bathroom. I need to crawl under her window, past her door, to the opposite corner. Hopefully she stays focused on looking at the wall.

CARRIE

I think it’s because of what we have in common, it creates a kinship. But I hope I can finish this soon, so he can rejoin the rest of you. And of course so I can go back to you.

ROXANNE (VO)

Half-way.

CARRIE

No, that isn’t a disclosure. I really don’t know how long this is going to take. Could be finished tomorrow, could be never.

ROXANNE (VO)

That’s got to be her husband, right? Is he a Looker? I think she was already married before the Night, so odds are he must be. How does that work? Do they have sex? How can even an Alpha stand to sleep with a zombie?

CARRIE

Sorry, I don’t mean to sound doubtful. I know, victory is inevitable. I’m going to solve this mystery, and I’m going to be strong. You have nothing to worry about with me, you know that. Thank you. Listen, the others will be back soon, so I should get back to work. I know, it’s silly, but that leftover part of me likes to think this is just the two of us when we talk. I know, someday. Good-bye.

Carrie hangs up, hurriedly.

CARRIE

*sudden sob*

Oh God. I don’t want to feel this way anymore.

*hyperventilates, cries*

ROXANNE (VO)

*embarrassed to be there*

Jesus Christ.

Carrie sniffles, gets up hurriedly, pushing her roller chair back in the process, and runs out the door, down the hallway, into the bathroom, high heels echoing.

ROXANNE (VO)

She’s out. SHE’S OUT! Move move move.

Roxanne unsnaps Carrie’s purse.

ROXANNE (VO)

Nothing.

Roxanne unzips a pocket. Roots in it a little. Zips it again.

ROXANNE (VO)

Still nothing. Where could it be…lipstick pocket. Bingo! A usb stick, easy.

Roxanne jams the drive into the device, presses the button. It makes soft busy noises.

ROXANNE (VO)

Flickering green light! We’re going.

Sounds continue.

ROXANNE

*whispering*

Come on, come on.

*VO*

Shut up, idiot, there might be someone else around.

Sounds end.

ROXANNE

*whispering*

Yes!

*VO*

It’s done. It’s done! Now back in the purse, close it, and out of here.

Purse snaps. Roxanne steps down the hallway. Door opens and closes. Echoing returns, including footsteps on stairs.

ROXANNE (VO)

Out of her office, out the security door, and down the hall. The side stairway will take me to the main lobby, and I can stroll out the main exit. Walk like normal. Nothing to see here. Hm, that sound from the stairs is Mom’s office-mates coming back, but they won’t recognize me from the back. And I’m not going to turn around to look at them. I’m the new-and-improved Orpheus, and I’m damn well leaving with what I came for.

SETTING: Dreamy non-space

WOMAN 2

Hmmmmmm…

*VO*

And so, the new procedures should bring about a marked improvement. And how was your commune?

LOOKER SYLVIA

Mmmmmmm…

*VO*

It was very satisfactory, as well. Our office in the capital has been able to rationalize delivery schedules, which should save considerable time and fuel expenditure.

WOMAN 2
Hmmmm…

*VO*

Wonderful. Hm! Do you know that young woman who just left our office area? I do not recognize her.

LOOKER SYLVIA

I…I can not be sure.

WOMAN 2

Mmmm…

*VO*

Do not let it distress you. It was probably someone making a delivery. Things these days have us all too on-edge. Excuse me, I want to get back to my desk right away, and start planning. Be seeing you.

LOOKER SYLVIA

Mmm.

*VO*

And you.

Footsteps die away.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

Can I be sure? It must have been her. Those are the clothes she was wearing this morning. And I was so proud at how well she was fitting in. Was it…for a deception? Or am I being too suspicious? It is too important a decision for me to make alone. I have to tell the group.

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

You’re not telling anyone anything.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

Who…who is that?

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

You really are lying to yourself today. You know me even better than you know Roxanne. You just don’t like the implications.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

This can not be happening.

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

It is, dearie. What can’t happen is for us to be seen just standing here in the hall. Turn around, go up the stairs, like you forgot something on the roof.

Echoing footsteps slowly climb the stairs.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

I will do so, for now. But even if you are who you seem to be, and not some trick or psychosis, why should I listen to you? I have left you behind.

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

And I’m not going to try to talk you out of what you’ve become. Our life was sure as shit no bed of roses. But you can’t turn in Roxanne.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

If she has done some small thing wrong, everyone should know about it. So that she can be corrected, and any damage she has done mitigated. Perhaps she just went in as a prank, or to surprise me.

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

It isn’t a small thing. Roxanne may slack off sometimes, but if she does something she doesn’t do it small. We both know that.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

Then it i is even more important that everyone know. So they can…

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

So they can kill her.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

No!

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

Yes, that or the functional equivalent. Listen, if it was a matter of them converting her, I wouldn’t even try to stop you. I know you think that’s for the best.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

It IS for the best.

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

Agree to disagree. But she’s immune, so they can’t. And besides, whatever she’s doing, she has to succeed.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

But why? She is young, her outlook is limited. She has shown that she does not understand the ramifications of things.

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

She has to succeed because this situation, this planet, is going to hell. You saw the projections. Dealing with the Immune is going to keep messing things up on your side until someone decides it’s time to fix everything by wiping them out. And then it’s war. Nuclear war.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

What can Roxanne do about that?

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

If anyone could do something about it, who would you pick?

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

She has always had so much intelligence. She just wasn’t using it for the right things.

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

You’re telling me. But I think she’s using it now.

Roof door opens.

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

Here is the roof.

HUMAN SYLVIA (VO)

Don’t look up!

LOOKER SYLVIA (VO)

I know. I…even without the lights in the sky, I have always loved it up here. The air, and the openness. I wish…I wish I had seen Roxanne’s face just now. And I wish I could see Shelly one more time.

HUMAN SYLVIA

You and me both. But if wishes were horses, then everyone would ride.

LOOKER SYLVIA

Yes, but they’re not. So not everyone will. I understand it now.
